First recording of my voice on the internet. LOL. Leave me a message!
Korean Dramas are extremely addicting and they can turn your emotions upside down. My first korean drama was "Tomato". My aunt bought it for me on VHS, which at that time in 1999 was dubbed into my native language. Back then I had no idea it was called a "korean drama." I simply thought it was just a two hour movie. I also owned "All About Eve", "Autumn Tale", and "Winter Sonata" dubbed. Later, I realized that the original was much longer than a two hour movie. The dub was not actually anything close to what the original drama was. Behold then something amazing happened, the second awakening of what would eventually change my outlook of my korean drama loving obsession. Read on.
"Winter Sonata" on VHS dubbed (haha) was utterly irritating because the voices were so "sugary fake" (*gasps*). So I went online and researched for korean movies. Behold, I was baffled that the results had so many titles such as "Winter Sonata, Winter Love Song, Autumn Tale II, Endless Love Story". In 2002, I went to DVD Asian's website and bought the DVD set, praying it was the right one. Winter Sonata was the first korean drama I ever watched with english subtitles. I was also shocked at the video quality being superb, compared to the shabby VHS I was accustomed to. I fell in love with the soundtrack of Winter Sonata. It just totally blew me away and I couldn't spare a moment without listening to it.
Drama hungry, I went searching for other dramas with english subtitles. I came across a post on a messageboard about a taiwanese drama called "Meteor Garden". You can read about how Meteor Garden changed my life. From that moment on, my real life has never been quite the same. I laughed, I cried, I felt heart aching pain, I felt so much love. I reflected about my own life and the challenges on my journey.
I watched Stairway to Heaven without any english subtitles. I really had no idea what I was in for because I didn't even know what a torrent was. I didn't know what a subtitle file was. I didn't know how to join them together. I had a lot of learning to do and that's just what I did to feed my drama addiction. Countless hours of research!
Enter Fansubbers, these are the extraordinary people who devote and dedicate their talents into preparing translations and subtitles for us to download and watch. I admire these talented individuals & teams. I also respect their work. That means, when they say "Please do not hardsub, remove the credits, distribute", it means DON'T DO IT because it can lead to legal consequences for the people who sub the series. What is hardsub? That's when someone takes the subtitles and merges them into the movie file. You've probably seen many of these videos uploaded to Youtube and linked on many other sites. Some people do not care and have no respect for the subbers. Also, you've probably seen the bootleg fansub subtitled DVDs also sold on eBay and other sites. I encourage you to NOT buy them. Why? Because you can get it for free.
Bottom line, you can get a lot of good dramas for free. I, myself, am a drama collector so I buy as many original DVD boxsets as I possibly can. I've spent well over $3,000 so far on all my boxsets. Haha, I have a lot. Why do I buy them if I already watched them? I just like collecting the nice pretty shaped boxed dvd sets. Haha, it makes me feel one step closer to the real thing. LOL. Just kidding. I'm just weird.
How many dramas have I watched? I lost count, probably over 100-150.
Am I still writing reviews? Ah, I'd like to but I've been really busy watching other dramas. LOL. Seriously, I'd love to again. I start a project, then get sidetracked. Haha, guess I'm easily distracted.
I watch a lot of korean drama, do I have a life outside of k drama fluffy clouds? LMAO, yes of course. When I'm not fantasizing and drifting in korean drama bliss, I enjoy my time web programming, making videos, and digital photography. Read more about me.
Which korean drama character do I resemble/relate to most? Haha, I think I relate most to My Sassy Girl Chunhyang, (Chunhyang) because I sort of share a similar personality and story.
What do I want to be when I grow up? I just want happiness and to live a healthy, long life with the people I love.
Craziest thing I ever did for a drama? 1.) I didn't sleep for days trying to find Meteor Garden 2, then I sent money via Western Union to a girl who sold it to me from the Phillippines. 2.) I almost got into a car accident rushing home the day Meteor Garden 2 arrived at my house. I nearly fainted from happiness in my car. Then like cried my freaking eyes out, I didn't go to my college classes for two days because I was crying so bad and I was depressed. I had to watch Meteor Garden 1 all over again to set me straight. Hahaha. Yeah, that is crazy!
Things I wish I had known about korean drama .... the addiction, falling in love at first sight, and recognizing my true love :-)
